FAQs

What exactly do I have to submit? I read about a video, but I don’t understand what should be in the video.

The submission is in 2 parts: firstly you will have to compile a submission form (starting January 14th) with some details about the case. The final step of this form, is to upload your submission video. The video should be a max. of 4mins length, contain some clinical explanation of the case and most importantly the patient testimonial of how the treatment changed her/his life!

In the guidelines it says that along with patient testimonial, the clinical procedures must be present.  What exactly is expected?

You find more details in the "general requirements" section of the Participation Criteria page. In any case, you can find a guideline with recommendations for the documentation in the “recommendations and resources” section of the SmileAward website.

I don’t have video footage of the procedure. How can I submit my case?

That’s not a problem. We are not looking for a video documentation of the clinical procedures. The final submission is a video but can be made simply with a collection of images and the patient testimonial.

I don’t have video making skills, how can I create a video?

Do not worry, we don’t expect a cinema competition! The video can be made simply – for example also transforming a PowerPoint presentation into a video.

I have several cases that fit the criteria, may I submit more than once?

Of course!!! We welcome and encourage you to submit several cases to increase your chance of winning!

I have a case, but it only includes a temporary restoration. Is this accepted?

No, a final restoration is mandatory to participate in the award.

My patient does not speak English. How can I create the testimonial?

We completely understand that the patient might not speak English and that is not a problem. Please just ensure you add subtitles so the jury can understand the testimonial.

What will the jury assess to choose the winners?

They jury will consider the clinical principles, the precision on execution (initial situation, final result, grading of difficulty, operative sequence, compliance), quality of the clinical documentation, impressions and feelings and above all, the impact of the treatment in the patient esthetic, function, health and quality of life.

I used products from another brand in the treatment, can I participate?

The cases must be treated with Straumann solutions and products using immediate protocols, respecting the Instructions For Use and clinical indications. As Straumann clearly recommends and promotes use and combination of original Straumann products, we only accept cases in which only Straumann products or products recommended by Straumann were used throughout the treatment.

I already have an intra oral scanner, can I have another prize option instead?

There are several prizes possibilities in this contest. There are 3 categories: #GivingSmilesBack – these are prizes related to pro bono cases; #ChangingLives—these are donations to NGOs; and #BoostingYourPractice—these prizes are tangible prizes such as IOS and ITI courses and memberships. Should you be ranked amongst the top 8, you will be able to choose your prize amongst these categories.

In my country there are legal restrictions with regards to prizes. Does it still make sense for me to participate?

Of course! We are aware that some countries have legal regulations that don’t allow receiving tangible prizes. For this reason, should you win, you will be able to choose your prize among several options, including pro bono cases and charity donations.

Is there any additional guidance to support me in knowing how to prepare the video?

Yes! We have compiled 3 tips:

  1. A downloadable recommendation guide for photo and video case documentation
  2. Useful resources such as ITI learning modules, the ITI SAC tool and the ITI Consensus Statements and clinical recommendations for the treatment of the edentulous jaw
  3. An example of video submission

You can find all of these in the “recommendations and resources” section of the SmileAward website.
