Patient-centered treatment protocols: prosthetic and surgical solutions for predictable results in esthetic and fully edentulous cases

Implant therapy has proven to provide not only long-term success, but also predictable treatment outcomes and pleasing esthetics. Nevertheless, esthetic cases and fully edentulous jaws with substantial bone resorption still present significant challenges to successful oral rehabilitation. The presentations by João Caramês, Helena Francisco (both Portugal), Charlotte Stilwell (UK), and Daniele Cardaropoli (Italy) will focus on the techniques for treating complex esthetic cases, as well as on the Straumann® Edentulous Solutions designed to enable personalized treatment protocols, taking into consideration patient expectations and unique anatomic, clinical situations. Particular attention will be paid to patient-centered outcomes, treatment planning, prosthetic and surgical protocols, recent literature, and case reviews. The session will be translated into Spanish.
Presentation #1 - Patient-centered treatment protocols with Straumann® Pro Arch for fully edentulous cases

Biography
Professor João Caramês, Founder and Clinical Director of the Institute of Implantology in Lisbon, Portugal, is a leader in the field of Implantology and Dentistry. He is a renowned international lecturer, researcher, and professor at the Lisbon University College of Dental Medicine and a visiting professor at New York University (USA). He has authored and published a number of scientific papers besides building up the clinical practice at the Institute of Implantology. Professor Carames’ multidisciplinary practice is dedicated to Dental Medicine and Oral Surgery where he has treated thousands of patients since the outset of his clinical career. His professional excellence and incessant search for knowledge are characteristics intrinsic to the culture of the company he has created. These are also the values he transmits to the clinical team that accompanies him.
Abstract
This presentation proposes a user-friendly classification of fixed and removable prosthodontic options for the edentulous maxilla and mandible. The Anatomic Carames Classification was developed to focus on the individual patient rather than on an implant system or technique.
Based on the available therapeutic bone height and width in the anterior and posterior jaw, evaluated by means of CBCT, five levels of jaw atrophy usually found in the author’s clinical facility were identified and will be introduced during the presentation. For each level, fixed and removable full-arch rehabilitation programs will be proposed, including the number of implants, type, location, average length and the need for regenerative procedures.
The patient-specific treatment recommendations aim to aid clinicians during the treatment planning and in their communications with patients.
Presentation #2 - Successful treatment of fully edentulous patients using Straumann® Pro Arch with tilted distal implants

Biography
Professor Helena Francisco acquired a PhD from the University of Lisbon, School of Dental Medicine. She received the Postgraduate Certificate in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry from the New York University College of Dentistry (USA) and is a member of the Research Group for Oral Biology and Biochemistry Research Unit in Oral and Biomedical Sciences. Besides practicing dentistry, Professor Francisco also works as an Assistant Professor and co-coordinator of the Oral Surgery and Implant Dentistry Post-graduate Program at the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Lisbon. She has authored several posters, as well as national and international publications.
Abstract
The rehabilitation of edentulous jaws with osseointegrated implants has proven to be a predictable treatment over time. Given the emphasis on evidence-based dentistry, rigorous scientific criteria should guide the selection of individualized treatment plans to ensure predictability of the esthetic and functional results of implant-supported rehabilitations. Bone resorption and anatomic limitations may present serious restrictions for conventional implant placement and can pose a significant challenge to successful oral rehabilitation. This lecture will focus on the Straumann® Pro Arch Protocol, focusing on the option of tilted implants to treat fully edentulous patients.
Presentation #3 - Practical experience with Straumann® Novaloc® retentive elements in combination with removable implant overdentures

Biography
Charlotte Stilwell is a specialist in prosthodontics. She qualified from the Royal Dental College in Copenhagen in 1983 and moved to London for five years of post-graduate training in removable prosthodontics at the London Hospital Dental School. This was followed by nine years in general dental practice before she took up her current position in 1997 as a referral specialist at a multi-disciplinary clinic in Harley Street, London. Charlotte is also a part-time senior lecturer at the Dental Faculty, University of Geneva, and she presents on the topics of conventional and implant prosthodontics and management of occlusion. Charlotte is a Member of the ITI Education Committee and Editor-in-Chief of the ITI Online Academy.
Abstract
Dentistry is faced with a growing elderly population which poses specific dental challenges. The transition to the edentulous state via a reducing dentition happens at an increasingly advanced age, and simpler yet effective rehabilitations may be more appropriate solutions. Retentive stud elements in combination with partial and complete removable implant overdentures are examples of such solutions. This presentation will present patient and clinician experiences with a new retentive stud element, Straumann® Novaloc®, and compare its performance against experiences of another retentive stud element, Locator.
Presentation #4 - Achieving optimal results with immediate implant placement in the esthetic zone using Straumann® BLT implants

Doctor in Dentistry and Certificate in Periodontology at the University of Torino, Italy. Active Member of the Italian Society of Periodontology, European Federation of Periodontology, Italian Academy of Osseointegration and Academy of Osseointegration. International Member of the American Academy of Periodontology. Scientific Director of PROED - Institute for Professional Education in Dentistry (Torino). Winner of the “Goldman Award” of the Italian Society of Periodontology and of the “National Award” of the Italian Society of Orthodontics. Member of the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry and the American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics. Author of several articles published on peer-reviewed journals, he focused his interest on Periodontology, Implant Dentistry, Regenerative Therapy and Ortho-Perio Interdisciplinary treatment. Private practice in Turin, Italy.
Abstract
The insertion of immediate implants in the esthetic zone is still a challenge for clinicians in terms of maintaining the soft tissue contour and long-term results. The Bone Level Tapered implant and the correct three-dimensional placement, along with the grafting of the bone-to-implant gap, seems to be effective in compensating for spontaneous alveolar ridge remodeling following tooth extraction. Instant restoration positively affects the stability of the interdental, midfacial and horizontal gingival tissues. This presentation will point to success factors for immediate implant placement using the Straumann® BLT implant in the esthetic zone.
